The commodity form

The commodity form as circulation

Hall’s model was formed in opposition to conceptualizations of the communicative processes as simply “a circulation circuit or loop” (Hall, 1980, p. 117) through which messages were transmitted and could—in the words of Meyrowitz (1993)—be studied as “medium-free” (p. 58, emphasis in original). The significant contribution of Hall was to see the communicative process “in terms of a structure produced and sustained through the articulation of linked but distinctive moments—production, circulation, distribution/consumption, reproduction” (Hall, 1980, p. 117).
